The chemical composition and aroma of essential oils can provide valuable psychological and physical therapeutic benefits. Think about how you feel when an orange is being peeled near you, or when someone is chopping fresh herbs, how about the rich scent of a cedar or pine tree forest. These benefits are usually achieved through methods such as oil infused sprays, application of diluted oil to the skin, and heated in a scented oil burner. They can also be added to good quality light oils such as grapeseed, apricot kernel, or almond, and used in massage or reflexology. Try adding some to coconut oil for a sumptuous body lotion. Experiment with scented sprays of your own combinations. NOTE: stronger scents will overpower the more delicate, so use them sparingly in contrast!
Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Where essential oils are derived from true plants, perfume & fragrance oils are artificially created, or contain artificial substances. They do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer. Fragrance & perfume oils are typically cheaper, and the scent does not stay true for very long. They are often overly strong, and do not invoke the natural mental & physical response common when experiencing the aroma of a natural essential oil.
An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, barks, roots, or other elements of the plant. Essential oils contrary to the use of the word “oil” are not really oily feeling at all. Most essential oils are clear, but some such as patchouli, orange, and lemongrass, are amber in color.
Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from. They are highly concentrated, and a little goes a long way.
You can often purchase an essential oil blend made from several different scents. The advantage if all the ingredients are pure is that you can save money by not having to buy each one individually. The disadvantage is that you have no control over the blend, nor can you reliably mix the blend with other oils, if each component is not listed.
Essential oils vary greatly in price and quality. Factors include the rarity of the botanical, the country of origin and growing climate, the standards of quality at the distillery, and how much oil is able to be produced from the botanical.
Many essential oils cannot be taken internally. If that is your desire then make sure the label says food grade or ingestible on the bottle.
