As we age, we must all encounter numerous setbacks that may affect our ability to function independently. Often these setbacks jeopardize our freedom of independence, and as time passes we need to rely more and more on others for our needs.
It is extremely important to be able to cope with your loss of independence. Some mechanisms include:
- Being Patient – Acknowledge your losses and practice self-acceptance. Recognize that aging and the loss of independence is normal and natural.
- Recognize your feelings – Allow yourself to have sadness and frustration, but remain positive about the good things you still have in your life.
- Remain Open – Be open to suggestions that may make your life easier. Do not live in denial, but rather discuss options and possibilities that will enhance your independence or relieve burden from your caregivers.
- Remain Active and Pursue New Adventure – Do not quit living. There are plenty of activities and adventures waiting for you; seize the moment.
- Accept Help – Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most people like to help others, just as you have probably done throughout your life time.
